Following the directions on the package slice and bake the sugar cookies. When removed from the oven place the heart template or paper doily on the sugar cookie and sprinkle the red sugar over all.

Place a small amount of sugar in a bowl or jar. Add one drop of food coloring and stir until the sugar has taken on the color. If you wish it to be more intense or darker add a second or even third drop of food coloring and continue to stir until the sugar is evenly colored.
