Wendy,
I just read your note and first I am sorry that the score sheets were not helpful. When and if this happens the head judge is at the show until closing and is available to answer questions about your score, the judging sheets, written comments or anything that has to do with the way the doll is judged. Unfortunatly once you leave the show with your doll, it is almost impossible for the head judge to help you understand your critique because they simply do not remember each and every doll entered.
I will add this information back to our site so that in the future those folks that are new to our competition will be aware that this conferance time is available. It is a common practice in almost any competition and I didn't add it to the information page when we changed our site but I will do this for the coming 2009 show.
Second, I assure you that the dolls entered were never judged by anyone that would have known you, known your work, or had any knowledge of whose doll belonged to whom. Our judges are all trained and hold certifications as professional judges, meaning they have completed seminars with recognized professional trainers and then serve as interns until such time as the trainer feels that he or she is ready to serve the doll making community as a knowledgeable and unbiased professional in the judging arena. Only one doll was accepted into the competition on the lower floor this year (that I am aware of) and that was because there was a glitch in the competition paper work that was being worked out. All other dolls were accepted on the upper level at the entry table while the dolls themsleves were hand carried to the judging area by our staff to the lower level and placed on tables for the judges to critique. Even the doll that was entered and accepted on the lower level was entered completely across the room from the judging area and the judging staff was on the opposite side of the room. If one of these ladies did see this doll and the person entering it, her code of ethics demands that she not judge this doll, but instead, would simply choose another doll from the table of entrants to critique and neither mention the fact that she had seen the doll entered or make any comment about the doll to anyone. Any remark from any judge about any of the dolls in the competition during the judging process is grounds for her/his immediate removal from the judging area by the Head Judge.
Third, the dolls are registered and a color coded card is placed on the doll when it is taken in for the competition and this tells the judge the category that you have entered into as well as the division. These are essential for any judge so that she understands the skill level, as well as the theme the doll has been created for.
A note here too to help you understand how hard we try to maintain a professional atmosphere in the judging area, the special awards given this year by Collectable Doll Company, Bell Collection, Jean Castille, The Les Belles Poupees Eiffel Tower Award, all of these folks were asked to make the decision about their spcial awards while no other company represntative was making their decision. We didn't even place the awards by the doll so that the choices would be made in a fair and impartial atmosphere.

As far as rude comments, each judge is asked to supply the entrant with constructive criticism so as to better her work. I don't know your doll or what your sheets were like but I assure you that they were never meant to be rude. In the future talk to the head judge and let her explain things to you so that your competition experience can be a positive one. From the visit with her and the explaination she gives, almost without fail this gives the entrant a full explanation of the questions she/he may have about the doll they entered.
I have been lucky enough to have been involved in doll shows for almost 20 years. First (and still) as a dealer and for the last 6 years as a show promoter and our objective at Les Belles Poupees is to try and offer you not only the best showroom and competition experience that we possibly can, but to make your time with us enjoyable and educational. I know that we simply cannot please everyone all the time but I do ask that you give us another go!
