AL,
There is a tool used by many of us to tell the heat inside the kiln and it is called a pyrometer. They are usually rather expensive (over $100) but their job is to tell the user how hot the kiln is inside. They are available from several distributors and is a great way to tell exactly how hot your kiln is at any given moment by inserting the prongs into the vent holes while the kiln is running.
Your best bet is replacing any coils that are not functioning and running your kiln using witness cones. A witness coen is going to be your best friend when firing and will let you know when you are firing too hot, too cool or on the money!
Paragon has an encyclopedia of information about kilns in general on their web site and they are a huge help in solving problems. They also have replacement coils and supplies you may need for your kiln.
Google search Paragon and it will take you right to their site.
Also remember that a kiln is just a big oven and once you get the coils correctly replaced and learn the quirks of your particular kiln the rest is easy.......load, set it and fire!
Good luck!
