Here's the stuff I saved when I was looking to do one for my SIL last year (including how I finally did mine.) Good luck and happy crafting!

I saw one on a craft show a week or so ago. They used disposable diapers. For the center
they used a baby bottle and wrapped the diapers around it until it was the desired size.
Secured them with large rubberbands. and as the last layer they folded a receiving
blanket around the diapers to cover them and secured with baby pins. They then added
toys and other baby items on top and wrapped in clear plastic to form a basket, tied with
ribbon. They are very cute. Hope this helps! Good luck. Ava

My sis-in-law received one of these diaper cakes as a shower gift. We took it apart
thinking "we can do this!" and it seems very simple. The center was a plastic baby bottle.
Then disposable diapers were wrapped around the bottle and secured in layers with
rubberbands. I think it used about 25 of the newborn size diapers. At intervals, small
accessories such as pacifiers, diaper pins, small rattles, etc. were secured with colorful
curling ribbon. After all the diapers were wrapped, wide eyelet lace was wrapped around
the top edge and stitched end to end to cover the last rubberband. It was really cute and
colorful and relatively inexpensive. I hope this helps!

I would gladly give credit where it is due. However, this is a very old article with no
magazine ref. on either side. So here goes...
For either cake, make a base from heavy cardboard.1 in.wider than cake. I found it easier
to buy a real plate from a dollar store.
Need: 1 dz. padded cloth diapers, 1 toilet paper tube, 29 1/2X10" piece poly. fabric (I
never used this!), 6 pr. infants/child's pastel crew socks, 1 pr. child's knee socks (I pref.
not to use either), Plastic or icing cake letters (BABY), 2 yds. knitting worsted (I didn't
use), 3 3/8 pompons,1 pr. plastic pants, Small toys to tack to cake (rattle, pacifier, etc).
Diaper pins. Small plastic flowers (I used silk). Finished cake was approx. 6" high and
10" around. 1. Fold diapers into thirds lengthwise and roll around the tube. You can
slightly overlap them or butt them against one another and tape. 2. (I didn't use this. I left
the cake white) Wrap fabric snuggly around to mark for seams. Stitch or use fabric glue.
Slide over diapers gathering to look like frosting.Tuck top and bottom edges inside. Tuck
plastic pants and diaper pins in the tube. 3.(I didn't use this either) For edging, stretch
knee socks as far as possible. Roll into a thin tube pinning to scrap cardboard. Tie tightly
with yarn at 1" intervals. Remove from cardboard and place around bottom of cake.Pin in
place. (there will be a gap) 4. For sock leaves (I used silk) tie off 1" of heal and toe of 2
socks with yarn. Pull ends into points. Stuff excess sock into center tube in cake. Pin
points of leaves to center of cake. 5. Sock roses...make 7...Fold sock in 1/2
lengthwise.Grasp between thumb and forefinger and roll tightly, forming a bud. Pull
edges down as you roll.Hand tack through all layers. Pin as desired to cake. (I actually
made more than they suggest) 6. Flat sock flowers...make 3... fold sock in 1/2 lengthwise.
Baste along fold. Gather tightly into flower and knot. Glue pompon into center. Pin to
cake. Pin other silk flowers to cake. Glue letters to fabric and pin to top of cake.(I glued
toy blocks with "boy" "girl" "baby" or the child's name..if I knew it) I'm not doing these
anymore...I don't want to think what that implies! I really did get compliments on these. I
just didn't like the poly fabric or plastic flowers.

This is how I make my "cakes" (makes a small one):
You will need
One baby bottle
6 cloth diapers (or you can use disposables)
Rubber bands
Various baby items (ie samples of shampoo, lotion etc etc., rattles, teethers etc etc)
Receiving blanket
Diaper pins
Take the one diaper and fold in thirds length wise (or to heighth you want), wrap around
the bottom of the baby bottle (you can fill with m&m's, q-tips or whatever you wish),
secure w/rubberband, take another diaper and do same (wrap around first diaper). Do this
with the rest of the diapers. Then take receiving blanket and fold to match heighth of
diapers. Wrap around the outside of diapers and secure with diaper pins.
Stuff the various items in the top of the cake "folds" (so they stick out). You can pin
some lace around the cake and add some curling ribbon.
I don't know how to make the baby though. Hope this helps.:))
You open the diaper and roll it around a thick dowel and then hold the diaper in place
with an elastic band. After putting on several diapers I then removed the underneath
elastic bands. Once you get started you'll understand what I mean.
I have found a very practical and cute idea for a centerpiece. It is called a diaper cake.
You will need at least one package of disposable diapers (depending on size), and several
small baby things (brush, pacifier, rattle, etc....). You start with a diaper and roll it up,
then add another , and another ..... you make it like a two tiered cake. make the first one a
little bigger. Add a rubber band every once in a while to hold them together. This can
turn into a 3 or 4 handed job. Then on the last layer on the outside, use ribbon to cover
the rubber band, and tie in a bow. Push a straw or dowel threw the middle of the bottom
layer and then push the top down over. Then put the baby items in the cracks between the
diapers, and on top. This makes a great gift for the mother to take home.

I am giving a shower for my sister-in-law the first weekend in Nov. and just finished a
diaper cake for her. If you have any questions, feel free to email me back. Make sure you
have a variety of big rubber bands and an extra pair of hands ready should you need
them. Mine is four tiers and stands 2 feet high! The bottom layer is size three disposable
diapers, (18 inches around), the next is size twos and the top two are size ones. You
basically start with a dowel for the center almost as tall as the cake will be. To do this,
lay one diaper from each layer side by side and that it the finished height. Cut the dowel
so it comes half way up the diaper for the top layer. In other words, if your finished cake
is going to be 24 inches high, use a 20 or 21 inch dowel. (I used a bottle filled with after
dinner mints for the topper and in order to hold it in place I placed it on top of the dowel
so it was used for half the anchor for the top layer.)Start with the bottom layer. Unfold
the diaper, start at one end of it and wrap it around the dowel. Keep adding diapers one
by one, periodically adding a rubber band to hold them until you either run out of diapers
or have a bottom layer the size you want. To add the next smaller layer, do the whole
process again starting where the dowel sticks out of the first layer. I ended up with four
giant rolls of diapers when I was done all held together by the dowel in the center. I
wrapped things around the outside of each layer to cover the rubber bands and give it a
finished look. I covered the bottom layer with a folded crib sheet, the next layer with a
receiving blanket, the next with a hooded towel (folded diagonally so the picture on the
hood was displayed), and the top layer with a cloth diaper, securing them with diaper
pins in the back.I put it on a deli tray and stuck items between the diapers like pacifiers,
rattles, toys, teethers, brush and comb, rolled up washcloths, medicine dropper, diaper
rash ointment, etc. I rolled up onesies and a gown and arranged them around the base of
the cake along the rim of the tray and on the whole cake, I tucked in curling ribbon and
silk flowers to fill in the empty spots. Good luck and happy crafting!
