barrettes

Years ago I made fancy barrettes for my daughter by starting with a plain metal barrette, using two colors of very narrow ribbon, covered the barrett and ended up with ends that hung down and you could tie knots in or add beads to. My daughter recently bought one for her daughter and I would like to be able to make her some more. Does anybody know how to make them?
