Snowflake pattern

I am working on a crochet pattern #7 from 10 different original snowflake patterns from the crochet works of sally v. george. found on www.sarahanns.com web site. I have worked the pattern up to round round 6. There is where I have trouble. I know how to sl st and decrease, but where it says to sl st in next 3 dc, ch 2 sl st to next dc is where I get confused. On all prior rounds the ch 2 sp is open. I'm not sure whether its still supposed to be that way or not. The lady who furnished these patterns does not crochet. The patterns are her mothers. Any help would be appreciated.
