Indian (Hindu?) doll couple...old...

I am confused by a set of dolls I picked up at a tag sale in an elderly housing community. It is a man and woman, obviously middle eastern Indian, probably Hindu. Very ornate beading and yes, old. It looks like fabric, hardened (papier mache?) faces, painted. Clothes have gold thread, they have stiff legs but there is batting or soft material in the rest of the bodies. They are about 12 inches or just over tall. Again, the jewelry is quite lovely, beaded. Headress for man. What would you call this type of doll type. I would say that these are over 50 years old at least.
